Young Enterprise Launch

On Thursday the 14th of September Achievers from secondary schools across the region converged on Dumfries High School, where Idiom hosted the Dumfries and Galloway Young Enterprise Masterclass and Training Event 2018, on behalf of the Young Enterprise Dumfries and Galloway Area Board.  Representatives from Stranraer Academy, St Joseph’s College, Dalbeattie Academy, Castle Douglas High School, Wallace Hall Academy and Dumfries High School (Idiom) attended the conference.

The programme for the day involved Achievers participating in various workshops to find out more about running a business. The afternoon sessions focused on a business game which became fast moving and highly competitive – a real learning curve for all! These sessions were delivered by the Young Enterprise Area Board Team.

Guest Speaker Jade, founder of Treats, Darling? (manufacturers of Gourmet cake pops), gave a presentation to the Young Entrepreneurs about her experiences of moving to Scotland from London to open her new cake making business, and highlighting to them that the business world is ever changing.

Lyle, Managing Director of Idiom said: “the event was the first chance for everyone taking part in the programme to speak to each other about what they are planning to do as well as giving the companies the information they need to go and run their companies this year.”

The Young Enterprise Company Programme gives young people in S5 and S6 the chance to form a company. The companies must work together to create, market and sell their product to the general public. The programme allows young people to get a hands on, ‘in the deep end’, experience of running their own business, and is run in countries across Europe!

At the Masterclass, the ‘School of Marketing’ was also officially launched. The ‘School of Marketing’ has partnered with Young Enterprise UK to deliver a Marketing Course, and facilitate a Marketing competition that Young Enterprise Companies will have the option to take part in as part of this year’s Company Programme.
