Primary Science

As part of the ongoing transition between Dumfries High School and the cluster Primary Schools, Locharbriggs Primary have been visiting Ms Henry in the Science department over several weeks.

P5, P6 and P7 have been learning about a range of scientific topics.

P5 were learning a range of techniques used to separate substances.  These included Chromatography, where they used ink on filter paper with a drop of alcohol and water mix to see the separation of the inks.  Filtration was when they filtered the sea water through a filter leaving the sand behind.   The last technique they learned was evaporation.  They boiled their now filtered water till it produced salt.

P6 were learning about the states of matter.  They had to master using a Bunsen burner safely and how to correctly use a thermometer.

P7 were learning about chemical cells and batteries.  They were using a range of metals and a salt solution to determine the combination which produced the largest voltage.  This was read on a multimeter.  Each different combination was noted to keep a record of which two metals closely replicated those within a battery to produce the highest volt of power.
