Fire and Rescue Service Anthony Nolan Awareness

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is currently supporting the Anthony Nolan National Charity which saves the lives of people with blood cancer – a partnership that was formed in 2009. To this end The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have now extended their search into Dumfries and Galloway for volunteers to help cure blood cancer.

Kenny McClurg, Watch Manager Prevention and Protection, has been given the local project to approach  schools to recruit volunteers between the ages of 16 and 30 who are in good health.

Further information on Anthony Nolan can be found by visiting the website at www.anthonynolan.org.uk

Dumfries High School was delighted to welcome Kenny and his colleagues from The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service who talked to S6 students about taking the charity forward through registering to become potential stem cell donors. The initial input/presentation was given by Area Manager Paul Devlin who works with many others promoting Anthony Nolan on behalf of the fire service nationally.

On Monday 5 November Kenny and his colleagues – Watch Manager Andrew Wilson, Watch Manager Barbara Johnstone –  came along to Dumfries High with Amy Bartlett, Regional Development Manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland for the Anthony Nolan Charity to register those students and staff who wished to be added to the UK donor register – an event that we hope will continue annually as well as The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service rolling out the presentation and donor registration event to all secondary schools within Dumfries and Galloway.

The Captaincy Team at DHS are now Ambassadors for the charity and can be seen in the photograph along with Kenny McClurg, Andrew Wilson, Barbara Johnstone – who processed the recruited donor forms from DHs staff and S6 students – and Amy Bartlett of Anthony Nolan.
