Dumfries High School Win Rotary Music Competition

The first round of the Rotary Young Musician took place at The Bridge on Wednesday 20th November.

Three schools in Dumfries had a total of 16 representatives, offering a wide range of instruments and voices, including Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Bagpipes, Acoustic and Electric Guitar.

Dumfries High School was represented by Eleanor (French Horn), Gregor (Bagpipes), Hollie (Voice), Kate (Voice), Logan (Eb Horn) and Ross (Alto Saxophone).

Despite nerves, all the students performed very well and the wide range of music went down very well with all who attended.

The adjudicator was Mr. Frank Davis, former Principal Teacher of Music and retired Head Teacher at Annan Academy.

Dumfries High School came away with two winners on the day. S6 student Kate winning the Voice category, singing one of her own compositions and accompanying herself on guitar and S5 student Ross sharing 1st equal in the Instrument category, performing 2 pieces on Alto Saxophone. This included a Charlie Parker transcription chosen at the last minute due to Ross’s interest in jazz.

These two students now go onto the area round of the competition in February.

We wish them well.
