Divine inspiration brings in the bucks

A SEASONAL recipe book created by a group of S6 pupils at Dumfries High School has been causing quite a stir locally!

The team, made up of S6 pupils, have a passion for local food and drink – many of them working for local cafes and restaurants.

It is this passion that sparked the idea to produce a seasonal recipe book called ‘Four Seasonings’ containing the flavours of the region using their company name ‘Divine’. .

Recipes from local businesses throughout Dumfries and Galloway feature in this unique book, as well as recipes from family, friends and teachers within Dumfries High School.

One of the S6 pupils involved said: “We created ‘Four Seasonings’ in collaboration with Matthew Campion at Solway Print.

“Our highly motivated team began the journey in September when we came together to brainstorm product ideas.

“The group decided on a seasonal recipe book because they spotted a gap in the market for something truly local.”

She added: “We all agreed that only recipes from local people would make it into the book, and we approached some of our favourite eateries to submit their best-selling dishes.” Together with the designer, the group produced a 58-page recipe book just in time for the Christmas rush and they’ve been flying off the shelves.

The students work on the project in their free time, but the rewards they reap are worth it.

Gemma, Managing Director of the group, said: “Leading the team has helped me to develop my communication, management and team working skills.

“The project has inspired me to consider a career in business when I leave school. Although it has been very challenging at times, I have enjoyed the buzz of creating something from scratch.”

Chloe who is the group’s Production Director particularly enjoyed the moment when the books arrived at the school: “Opening the box and holding the book in our hands was so exciting, and to finally have something to show for our efforts after such an intense process was exhilarating.”

Young Enterprise is a European programme for a varying range of ages which aims to equip students with business skills by placing them in real-life business situations.

This programme builds eight main skills; communication, confidence, financial capability, initiative, organisation, problem-solving, teamwork and resilience. All of which are key for a successful business.

If you want to support the team you can grab your own copy of ‘Four Seasonings’ for £11.99 at Waterstones in Dumfries, Dumfries High School, Heathhall Garden Centre, Bruno’s, The Swan or The Big Burns Supper Spiegeltent.
